The Ethiopian Textile and Apparel Professionals Association (ETAPA) recently took part in the inception workshop for a project called “Promotion of Circular Economy in Textile and Garment Sector through Sustainable Management of Chemicals and Waste” (GEF ID 10683). Dr. Abera Kechi, the President of ETAPA, represented the association in this workshop.
The project is set to span five years and will be implemented by the Textile and Garment Industry Research and Development Center (TDiRDC), which operates under the Ministry of Industry. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is partnering with the TDiRDC to carry out this project. The financing for the project is provided by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF).
During the workshop, Dr. Abera Kechi emphasized the importance of giving due attention to the management of chemicals in the project’s implementation. He highlighted that chemicals pose significant risks to the environment and human health, more so than fabric and garment wastes. This consideration is particularly crucial in the context of Ethiopia.
ETAPA’s involvement in this project showcases its commitment to promoting sustainable practices in the Ethiopian textile and garment sector. By focusing on circular economy principles and responsible chemical management, the project aims to contribute to the long-term sustainability of the industry while minimizing its impact on the environment and human health.
